Nineteenth of July

Sometimes I forget when something happened. With flickr, photo time stamps and my blog, it makes it easier to remember what I was doing around this time several summers ago. Sadly, I don’t have a photo from every July 19th since 2005, but I think 5/6 is good enough.

2005
Go Lakers!

I met Magic Johnson in the Student Activities Center at UCLA.

2006
No photos from this day. I was likely traveling to San Francisco for a meeting. I did a lot of that that summer.

2007
Red Mango

I think the frozen yogurt craze really took hold this spring/summer. I’m not a big fan, but I accompanied a friend for a cup at Red Mango in Westwood.

2008
Robert!

My cousin Frank and his wife hosted a graduation/birthday party for his brother, David. I got a photo with my handsome cousin, Robert, who at that time I didn’t seen much.

2009
Oiyan insists on representing Boston in LA.

I met up with Oiyan and several other people from the Ed School for a Dodger game. I don’t usually go to day games, but we sat in the shade.

2010
Dodger girls

Another Dodger game. I got free tickets from my cousin (I think). I took my sister, my roommate and his friend. The roommate accidentally spilled beer in my backseat while we were illegally tailgating. I think he was more upset about the wasted beer than I was about the mess/smell.

2011
Training plan

I didn’t meet any celebrities or attend a Dodger game. I did have yogurt (not frozen). After an uneventful work day, I went for a short, easy run. I made dinner (baked tilapia, rice and steamed broccoli and carrots) for two. I’m standing next to my colorful Long Beach Marathon training plan. I’m in the 7th week of the 18-week plan. Now Sean and I are re-watching the pilot of Friday Night Lights via NetFlix instant watch.

Youthful forefathers

Grandpa Bartolo, 19 years old, 1944, Salamanca, Guanajuato
My paternal grandfather passed away in 1996, but before that he left his mark through his ability to heal with his hands and his influence on his family. I was lucky to see him almost every Sunday and get to know him. He was a little strict, I think you’d have to be with a bunch of grandkids running around your house, but always kind and loving.

Papá Chepe, 25 years old, 1945, Los Angeles
I’m very close to my maternal grandfather. Since I was a kid, he’s lived with my family when in Los Angeles. I love dancing with him and hearing his stories about when he was a kid or when he first came to LA as a bracero. He’s worked hard his entire life in the fields and as a gardener. He’ll be 91 in a few weeks.

Dad, 18 years old, 1972
There’s a lot of things that I admire about my dad. One of those has always been his willingness to better himself for his own good and that of his family. At a young age, I saw him change his life and become a better father and husband (he wasn’t a bad father/husband before, but there’s always room for improvement). He’s made some big changes and been a good example of the benefits of hard work, fait and will power.

Twenty-five years

Family portrait, 1986

Ten things I like about this family portrait from 1986:

  1. Adrian barely fits in his clothes. He was a fat baby.
  2. Lori and I are wearing matching dresses. I think they were homemade. Our earrings arracadas jerezanas, match too.
  3. My parents look great. No surprise there.
  4. Neither Danny nor I are smiling. I’m pretty sure I was trying to hide my messed smile.
  5. My color. I’m sure no one looked at me as a kid and wondered why I was such a lighter shade of brown than my siblings. (Really, people have asked me this.)
  6. There’s only a slight hint of gray in my dad’s hair. I forgot what he looked like with dark hair.
  7. My mom is rocking the ’80s perm and big hair.
  8. Lori’s bob blends in to my dad’s jacket.
  9. Danny looks like he’s up to no good. Not a big surprise, since he broke a lot of stuff in our house growing up. (Have I told you about the time he and his friend decided to have a fight with the balls from our pool table and I got caught in the cross fire? Ouch.)
  10. The Olan Mills tag at the bottom. We took a lot of portraits at Olan Mills.

I think we’re still a good looking bunch.

The favorites

our mom is silly. we love her.

Adrian and I like to say we’re my mom’s favorites. I think the above photo is proof. Plus, I know she thinks Adrian is her best looking kid. She was joking then, of course.

Happy mother’s day, Mom!

And happy mother’s day to all the other marvelous mamas out there, especially my grandmothers, great aunts, aunts, cousins and friends.

Now, off to help with the tamales!

(Note: I didn’t pose with the beer because I wasn’t drinking at the time for medical reasons. Boring. At least I was a reliable designated driver.)

Mil palabras: Disney Hall (or, mile 4)

Disney Hall

One of the things I read in the reviews of the 2010 LA Marathon was praise of the “stadium to the sea” course highlighting a landmark every mile. This year’s course differs slightly, but still begins at Dodger Stadium and ends a few blocks from the Santa Monica pier.

I like the “stadium to the sea” theme, mainly because it makes me think of LA having a subway or light rail that would traverse a similar route. I’m less excited about the landmarks, probably because I live here. I don’t think of places like the Troubador or the House of Blues as landmarks. They’re just places I go to see shows, like The Dears last week.

Now, Disney Hall? I consider it a landmark, probably because it’s designed by Frank Gehry, it’s cool to look at and it’s at the top of Bunker Hill with a few other cultural institutions. I don’t look forward to running up Bunker Hill, at all (but I’ve done hills, I’m prepared!).

Some of my favorite landmarks (Hollywood Bowl, UCLA, Griffith Observatory, LACMA and Museum Row) aren’t on the course, but I don’t mind since most of those are in the hills. It also bums me out that the course no longer crosses over the LA River in to the Eastside.

If you want to see where I’ll be spending Sunday morning, check out this neat video by the LA Times stitching together Google Maps street view images for most of the course. I’ve been through the VA Center near UCLA and the Dodger Stadium parking lot plenty of times. No surprises there.

What’s your favorite landmark on the course? What would you add?
