Mil palabras: Esos ojos

Ojitos has nothing on baby Alessandro

I met my 3-month old nephew when I arrived in Houston last Friday. It was noon and he was still wearing his Astros pajamas (his mom is a big fan).

I sat in the backseat of Vero’s black truck with the baby. He held my finger with his tiny fist and stared at me with his huge eyes.

I fell in love.

“Who do you think he looks like,” I asked Vero.

“Oh, he’s all Julio. He has the Mosqueda lips and everything. And when he smiles, you can definitely tell he has the Mosqueda smile. All of you have that big smile,” she responded nodding toward her husband/my cousin.

“Yeah, we do. Pero siempre estamos enojados, so we don’t show it,” I joked.

Julio laughed.

I studied Alessandro’s face some more. I have no clue what Julio looked like as a baby since he’s a few years older than me and he didn’t have any baby pictures on hand. However, I did notice that Alessandro’s eyes were like Eddie’s (Julio’s younger brother) and my tía Mari’s.

I miss Alessandro already. Of course, I miss my cousin and his wife too. They’re good people and I’m grateful I’ve gotten the chance to reconnect with them in recent years.

At the anniversary party two weeks ago, we displayed a three-panel poster board with photos of the family. The center panel had photos of Papá Chepe and Mamá Toni from their 15th, 25th, 50th and a few other notable anniversaries. The photo above is from the 15th anniversary. My mom was the baby of the family at that time. She was one year old.

Obama the Rockstar

Senator Barack Obama

“I feel like we’re at a rock concert,” Oiyan observed. Lisa and I nodded and looked ahead at the snaking line leading to a small lawn at Los Angeles Trade Tech College.

“Actually,” I noted, “it feels like we’re at an amusement park.”

I mean, who really goes to rock concerts at 8:30 in the morning?

But Oiyan was right, the town hall with Senator Obama was rather rock concert-ish.

Mil palabras: Rosas y muertos

My favorite float. What a surprise.

I haven’t spent New Year’s Eve in Southern California in about five years. As a result, I haven’t watched a telecast of the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day in a long time. But 2008 started off different. For one, I didn’t go anywhere. I usually try to get outside of Southern California. Since I stayed in Hacienda Heights, I was able to watch live telecasts of the Rose Parade the next morning. I squeezed into bed with my parents and the dog and watched marching bands, equestrian groups and elaborately decorated floats. I felt like a kid again and was reminded of the time I marched in the parade in 1999.

After a late lunch/early dinner, my mom, dad and I drove out to Pasadena to view the floats. It was crazy. I generally hate big crowds, but it was hard to get annoyed when I kept seeing so many cool floats (and they smelled good too).

My favorite was the City of Santa Fe Springs’ float celebrating Día de los Muertos. I haven’t uploaded all the pictures yet, but you can check out the set here
